Life as a bitcoin whale manipulator with tons of fiat and bitcoins

- place a new giant bidwall lower than previous supporting wall, where you want the price to go
- take a big whale dump on bids and get more fiat while minnows poop lower priced coins into your low wall
- Put a new bid wall at a higher price and watch the minnows panic buy, now you got more fiat, more coins

I get it. Yet I've fallen for it so many times.

So is that why they call it a whale?  Like Humpback whales do the same thing with air bubbles...blowing a ring around krill and driving them up to the surface to eat them...

[Interview with financial engineers in 2024, one bitcoin is $3 billion USD]

"Yes, many people have been predicting the end of Rpietila's Law, but year after year financial engineers and entrepreneurs have found innovative new uses for Bitcoin. When Bitcoin crossed the $10 million dollar mark, many said 'this is the end, the Bitcoin market cap cannot exceed the sum of all wealth on Earth,' but this proved to be just as short-sighted as those who thought a bitcoin could never be worth $100. By enabling new micro-transactions, and now even nano-transactions (and possibly even pico-transactions further down the road), we have dramatically increased the total wealth of all people on Earth just so that Bitcoin could accommodate it."

I have an interesting decision to make. I'll not be able to trade over the week-end, and probably for the whole next week.
Most of the coins were moved to a cold wallet.
Now, what to do with the rest...
Initially I planned to sell all and place scattered buy orders from below 250 and down to 150 with 3-5 dollar distance, and see which of them would get filled during my absence.
Looking at the latest development and extrapolating what happened in April, I am starting to get inclined to do the opposite: place scattered sell orders from 350 and up to 600, and hope that the top will not arrive before that, to subsequently re-buy at the new level, which I think will be around 400 (+/-100).
Any input from the experts?

You could always donate them to me!  ;-)  It would sure help my .19 BTC wallet expand slightly...

I just don't see how bitcoin could become a major currency to buy and sell goods without the volatility issue being mitigated first. This is why I think the 400 billion market cap should come first, and afterwards the whole currency shabang.

It's because everyone still thinks in terms of fiat, not bitcoin.  We're still using dollar, euro, yuan as the value indicators.  A house doesn't cost 250,000 dollars, ( or GBP, Euro, or Yuan counterparts) it should cost .25 BTC.  Because there will be so few bitcoins per person, each one will have to be worth at least 3 cows, 2 sheep, a pig, 4 chickens, and a daughter...

it's understandable that the questioner would be concerned about a currency who's value changes radically at times, but when you look at the long term charts, it would seem that more and more businesses would gladly accept them once they understand the risk/return.

Imagine selling one computer to someone for 20 BTC (when bitcoin was $65 = $1300) earlier this year, and keeping them safe in a cold wallet. Meanwhile all the others you sold with USD. That one computer sale would now net you close to $8000 so far. That's not a bad profit from simply having a "buy with bitcoin!" button next to your product.

And remember, as more and more people accept and use it, it will be more like using a dollar, where things will be priced in such a manner that it won't matter the value of a dollar, it will be, "How much is it worth in bitcoin".  The hardest part about this whole thing is that it's going from the bottom up.  We, as consumers are trying to get merchants to accept it, and the merchants either need to convert, or get their vendors to accept it, and so forth.  If we could get a very large vendor to accept it as payment for something that many people purchase and resell, then we'd really have a decent grasp on the economy...

I don't actually have 12 months of data. I think I got Chartbuddy started just after the crash. I download the data from Gox each minute. It takes up quite a lot of space and I have archived some of it off (Though it's still easily available). I'm considering a different scheme for storing the data (just deltas rather than the full dataset which is large even when zipped).

I figured it would be just the amount of BTC at each value range in a text file no?  I would still like to see it in it's entirety if it's at all possible  Grin

Perhaps in can be stuffed into a database and consolidated that way?

AH!!! A whole day or two!!!  Undecided I think I can deal with that, considering Coinbase took about 3 days to verify my bank account, 5 days for payments to go through (before this whole instant 10 BTC thing), and all that jazz, so a couple days is no thing...But I don't think any of my banks around here have any kind of SWIFT or BIC numbers, and I don't think I can use my routing number there...but in reality, I just want to put some mined BTC in there (from my whopping big 3gh/s miner making dust), sell high, and buy low, and when I want, send my BTC to an address at Coinbase to cash out on...Coinbase also is paying more for buys/sells anyways, so I'm sure I can make a few dollars like that too...

If there is one thing I've learned whilst dealing with political people, it's that they don't really care to comprehend anything, only how it effects them or their purposes.

Well, they (senators) could always create a bunch of unlisted addresses and take bribes without anyone knowing...That would be a positive effect on their bottom line and help fund whatever stupid purpose they have in life.

Exactly.

This, however, makes some statements about Bitcoin look idiotic.  In a link in this thread a couple of days ago, a guy on TV said

"Bitcoin price could go to million dollars"

Well, it could, as long as you are prepared to have up to 3 billion USD daily usage of electrical power to run such a network.

I'm just trying to wrap my head around where these daily electrical power usage numbers are coming from...are you implying that 100,000,000 more people will start mining and the price of electricity will quadruple?

I haven't done the numbers, but in an efficient market, the profit margin on bitcoin mining should be low.  Thus mining costs (purchase of equipment + electricity) should be only slightly below the profit (amount of bitcoins mined * bitcoin price).

Ah, well...bitcoin mining is far from efficient at current stupid high difficulty levels...I only do it for fun, but the dust I mine is worth more and more every day...just wish I had started sooner, or knew about bitcoin before March...

3600 bitcoins per day * 640=2m$ per day to sustain it?
At least. That's new money, based entirely around speculative movement, not utility.

Do we know how much money per day we had the last 3 weeks? 2m$ per day doesn't seem too much with this rapid increase. Many walls were eaten and if we consider that not all mined coins will sell the same day then it's a lot less.

Who in their stupid minds would sell off their mined coins?

A bit off topic, but what's the best way to get USD into any of the exchanges quickly*? I used to use bitinstant but that's down. Wires all seem to take 10 days. I need some capital ready to soak up the blood bath Sad

Since what happened tonight, I need a new one too...

Coinbase will lock in a price instantly, and deliver your coins in 5 business days (a week to you and me).

But there are a few problems with this strategy:

1. Must have a US bank account
2. Must have already completed a couple microtransactions
3. 10 BTC per day limit for buys (unless you do KYC)
4. Typically higher than Bitstamp and BTC-e, less than Mt. Gox though.
5. They are all out of coins at the moment.

Well, they give you a 10 BTC instant transaction, but the cash for it takes about a week to pull from your account.  You can also buy or sell up to 50 BTC a day.  What I'm doing is mining, sending them to bitstamp, selling high, buying low, sending to coinbase, and cashing out there because the value is much greater...

I feel sorry for the bears who are now stuck with Goxdollars Undecided

Why? I tend to forget them as 'dollars' and instead just bitcoin purchasing tokens. Coming to terms with the fact that they cannot be withdrawn and are thus just to be used to buy when the price is low and trade when oppertunity arises. It's nothing to feel sorry for anyone about. It's actually a good time to have some Gox-Tokens to be fair.

Since I can't get fiat into gox (mostly because I'm not paying stupid fees), I transferred some BTC into it, sold a little, and am waiting for another hiccup down under $600 to buy back at a profit.  If it keeps going up, I'll sell a little more up higher and buy back lower later.  I'm mining as well, so I'm holding that, plus I bought some wicked cheap on coinbase back in the day, so I've already made my money back, this is all just for play at this point, mostly because I'm trying to figure out good ways to earn bitcoin without selling my soul or buying too high...

Then when I'm done, I send it back to coinbase and arbitrage because they are generally higher pay than bitstamp, and even Gox once in a while...

Probably more then 50% here have less then 1 btc and are younger then 18 years old -> can't take anything seriously from such users

Every "normal" guy can afford at least 10-100 btc.

Thats ridiculous. Very few "normal" guys can throw $70,000 USD onto what is still very much an extremely speculative investment. Maybe you're on wallstreet and think $70K is throw away money, but don't be confused. You have to be crazy well off to throw $70,000 into something as far out as bitcoin.

I think 10 BTC is a reasonable amount for 'normal' guys to be able to obtain. I don't think anybody is saying that you should suddenly go out and put a single buy order in on gox for $7000, but I think obtaining 10 BTC over the course of like 6 months is a completely reasonable feat, especially when we aren't in a bubbling phase.

I wish I could spend 1/3 of my yearly income in 6 months on a speculation.  But unfortunately, I work a job that doesn't  pay me enough to do so.  I live, how do you say...paycheck to paycheck?

Fine, you're arrogant because you can't stop talking about how much better you are than US citizens Tongue.

You don't know shit about what has happened to our populace and our land.  Corporations and wealthy individuals own everything.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wealth_inequality_in_the_United_States

BTW, I don't buy the whole capitalist-socialist dichotomy.  Everything is shades of gray, and it is the extremes you have to watch out for.

You seem to want to restrict the term arrogance to what is probably better termed "US exceptionalism".  Yes, this is a form of arrogance, but arrogance can take many forms.
i don't have much of an opinion of u.s. citizens really. but the consensus about them is well established. i also don't buy the capitalist-socialist dichotomy... as it's commonly illustrated.

i think the perceived arrogance of people from the US is much due to US exceptionalism, yes -- i was making that point because that is what non-US folks are exposed to. but i am talking about the dictionary definition of "arrogance".

sure, there is great wealth inequality in the u.s. that doesn't mean there isn't far greater wealth inequality elsewhere, such as in South America. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/32/Gini_Coefficient_World_CIA_Report_2009.svg

it also doesn't speak to the effect of historic exploitation of the southern hemisphere by the north. over 53% of world net worth (based on PPP) is concentrated in North America and Europe, which has less then 15% of world population. when we talk about wealth inequality, surely comparing that of the u.s. with that of that of bolivia is sort of ridiculous, right? are we talking about being entitled to basic human necessities, perhaps education? or are we talking about being entitled to a basic minimum income? or big screen tvs? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Distribution_of_wealth

in the u.s., when people complain about entitlements, i hear complaints about people buying big screen tvs with welfare checks. (i take that with grain of salt) surely, you don't think that these are the sort of entitlements that Brazilians seek? that they are arrogant for fighting for? especially given the nature of wealth inequality?

am i arrogant for fighting for a better education system for my children? i must feel so self-important?  Smiley

it's one thing if the state does not exists. it's another thing if the state will exists for the forseeable future, and exploits, and allows exploitation. in the latter case, i think it is only reasonable for people to try to reform the state, to legally prescribe what had once been unwritten -- their ownership, their rights, their dignity. even if i do not support reformism. i still do not see this as arrogance. someone who is arrogant by definition does not see themselves as equal to others.

As I already tried to explain, we have the same master and we should work on an escape plan.  But you would rather argue over who gets whipped the hardest. The fact is, state boundaries only exist for the general populace.  Corporations are transnational.  The state has become a tool for them to divide and conquer.
no, my issue was just with referring to Americans as people from the u.s.  Cheesy  i'd rather not argue over that, but felt it was necessary since your assertions about entitlements (and thus, their relation to "arrogance") are relative to the context of the u.s. and thus have very limited application. part of the issue, also, is that our proposed escape plans are likely quite different.

I never did that.  You assumed I did, and then argued with me about arrogance.

Okay, whaa whaa whaa...take this to some other thread.  We're speculating on bitcoin, not who's panties are in a tighter bunch.  Please, for the love of the flying spaghetti monster, find a different place to play.

$34.8 million now on the Gox order book. This is up from around $13 million at the start of October.

I understand continuing to use Gox as I've been using them since the very beginning, but I certainly wouldn't be sending them additional $ if I wanted to buy BTC in the last few months.

Is this perhaps USD that was always there, but not on the order book? Or are folks really sending new $ there? Perhaps the Second Market guys? Other large investors? I could see them not going to Bitstamp due the lack of liquidity. I still believe (no evidence) that Gox has private deals with large players for USD withdrawals. But they can't risk opening up that faucet to everyone and having it turned off unit their issued with the US Gov and CoinLab are addressed.

The only thing I did with Gox is send BTC over there to liquidate and buy new BTC at lower prices to send back to coinbase where the price is about the same to sell...

I feel like if bitcoin can't make a strong move to the upside, it will slowly meander down over a few weeks.  There's not as much buying pressure and a substantial amount more selling pressure than one week ago which is why the price has equalized for the short term.  If this increasing selling trend continues we could see substantially lower prices.

So what you're saying is: CHEAP COINS!

Insiders are selling while enthusiasts are buying.

I've confirmed this by sources.  SHOTR if you've already SODL!!!  This is scary!

So if insiders are selling and enthusiasts are buying, the enthusiasts will still continue to profit because they will still be using BTC.  So what if a few pu$$ies want to jump ship.  Let the weak hands run off and let the big boys play.

I've been confirmed an expert on candlesticks, without going into too much detail, my backtracked TA based on 3 and 5 SMAC values, confirms this is very bad.

by bad... do you mean good?  I guess it all depends on your outlook.

I can confirm that by bad he means it's good that it's not bad, if you know what I mean.

This is not confirmed, but even if it is, it's bad news as these merchants will cash out all their bitcoin and will further crash the market.  I have confirmed the last part where I just wrote "even if it is, it's bad news as these merchants will cash out all their bitcoin and will further crash the market".

Interesting. I can see why distress in emerging markets would be good for Bitcoin, and I predict a whole lot more distress to come. Not happy about that even if it will be good for my bottom line. Lotta people gonna get hurt. They'll get less hurt if they buy some bitcoin.

All headlines about financial events are always composed in the following manner:

<something just happened> [as|after|despite] <something unrelated that happened at the same time>

The second part after the "as" is chosen randomly. Its sole purpose is to make it appear as if they were able to understand or explain what is going on. You will not find a single news source that would ever publish an article about a currency or commodity or stock rising or falling without the obligatory "as"-clause attached to it in the headline, no matter how absurd it may seem:

"Bitcoin drops as emerging market concerns ease"
"Bitcoin drops as Fed is cutting stimulus further"
"Bitcoin drops after disappointing Apple report"
"Bitcoin drops despite disappointing Apple report"
"Bitcoin drops as Google Doodle celebrates Year of the Horse"
"Bitcoin drops despite 6-time All-Star Lance Berkman announcing retirement"
"Bitcoin drops as Justin Bieber is charged with Toronto limo driver assault"

"Bitcoin rallies as emerging market concerns ease"
"Bitcoin rallies despite Fed cutting stimulus further"
"Bitcoin rallies after disappointing Apple report"
"Bitcoin rallies despite disappointing Apple report"
"Bitcoin rallies as Google Doodle celebrates Year of the Horse"
"Bitcoin rallies as 6-time All-Star Lance Berkman announces retirement"
"Bitcoin rallies as Justin Bieber is charged with Toronto limo driver assault"

This is correct. We need a name for this syndrome.

Can we call it the "Irregardless Clause".  Mostly because I love hearing people use fake words that have no meaning...

EDIT: I.E. "Bitcoin rallies irregardless of disappointing Apple report"

I suppose that the Real Satoshi may own other coins besides those, isn't that possible?

Well, you can go look at each block in blockchain.info.  Start with 00001 and move your way up.  The first few hundred blocks have just one transaction, and that is they were mined into existence to addresses and have yet to be touched.

I think that we are really starting to see adoption on a grand scale.   Obviously we have a long ways to go, but I don't think the price yet reflects this last large wave of companies starting to accept bitcoin.   Everyday you jump on the internet, you see a new company starting to accept bitcoin.   It is simple logic that as more companies accept it, the more people will need bitcoin.

The problem we're having in reality is that we're working on a bottom up approach where consumers have the desire to spend BTC, but companies need to accept it.  Then those companies just turn it into fiat, rather then being able to use it to buy things like power, food, materials, etc.  There needs to be some startups that accept BTC and use BTC to pay for their needs as well.  If only we could get some power companies to accept it as payment, then have those companies pay their employees with it and buy upgrades and such.  Silly economic workings...

So, when is someone going to buy an island, start a farm, power plant, ISP, and waste water treatment facility that does everything in bitcoin?  Then, we can say F*** fiat, lets price everything in BTC.  I'd rather pay a set BTC price every freakin' time then buy a couple pizzas worth a few million dollars a couple years later.

Any takers?  That'd be the easiest way to start a TRUE BTC economy that's not dependent on the Fiat->BTC relationship.  Granted, it would probably take a little while to get going, but it would be awesome...

Why don't you just say it, rather than getting annoyed merely b/c you see something that someone else does NOT.

The bandwidth of the subtext channel is variable, but can be several orders of magnitude larger than the text channel.  You can't stuff 50 pounds of crap in a 10 pound sack.

I find it delightfully amusing when extremely literal people collide with extremely aromatic people.

Depends on their aroma I suppose...  Wink

but, but, he posted the pic just for the .... wait for it .... halibut!

Yes.

Also...7 day trend makes me think weekend dip will be mediocre, then a minor push back up to about $615 by Saturday around 10 PM Eastern Standard Time.  Usually what happens is: I go to bed, price shoots up, I wake up and kick myself for not having a bot to buy low and sell high...

a) Miners are very picky about pools, if something is wrong they switch. This is not "in theory", it happens all the time. Do you remember Ghash.io from last summer? Where are they now?

b) PoS has a huge image problem and it's unproven on a large scale.

A) I dunno, haven't mined BTC since before ASICs came out and difficulty and electricity costs skyrocketed.

B) PoS has image problem?  PoSV is the solution.  Reddcoin is a PoSV coin that gains coin-age over time, but slows down tremendously if the coins aren't moved.  Basically, the more you spend, the more you earn.  Roughly 5% "inflation" on your coins.  Easy to get and there are different wallets available, such as the Browser wallet for google chrome (uses a seed), the typical QT wallet, and the Social Wallet that is connected to twitter, the IRC channel, etc... plus a few new features yet to be seen in cryptocurrencies, are going to make this a breakout coin.  Best part: I can stake on a raspberry pi.  No spending stupid amounts of money on ASICs that will be useless in a month, no driving down the price because of selloffs to pay for electricity for those ASICs.  5 watts of power to secure the network, not a few megawatts.  Plus, I'll actually break even.  I don't know one person that has purchases an ASIC recently that has made their money back.  Early adopters of the ASICs that didn't buy from BFL might have had a chance, or those who sodl when BTC was > $1200 made their money back, but anyone who's purchased anything to mine BTC using BTC will never make that back.  Better to buy BTC or sell shovels.

Everybody, get ready for a massive dump, because I just bought back in. Somehow what I do always makes the price do the opposite  of what is good for me.

This is exactly how it works for me.  I'm THE best counter indicator there is.  Sold before the huge boom @ 240 back in early '13, kicked myself in the ass.  Bought back in not that long ago around $300, sold at $250, bought at $230, sold at $215.  Every time I buy, the market drops and every time I sell, the market goes up.  I need to have 2 accounts so I can buy on one and sell on the other and be covered either way.

I'm about to buy, so sell now at the top.  Price to drop back to 215 in 10 minutes.
